The latest tiny paper-cut diorama, “Muse Ut Vos Postulo Suus,” is in an Altoids “Smalls” tin.
The Illustration Friday topic this week is “layer.” There are seven layers in this tin, each spaced far enough apart to cast a shadow on the next deepest layer.

A few more pictures taken in sunlight – it’s a little easier to see the muse floating above the other layers.

Happy Illustration Friday, once again.
Update:
Hot Damn! This made “Pick of the Week” at Illustration Friday!
Completely awesome. Thanks, Illustration Friday!

Very nice!
This is amazing!

You must have so much patience. What a clever piece. Lovely!
Amazing stuff, dude. I love it.
no small feat. but very smalls feet. I LOVE this so much. You are doing some awesome art, dear jim.

“Muse Ut Vos Postulo Suus” means “I’m a little bit OCD,” doesn’t it?
You should be a tiny bit proud there! what a lot more than a tiny bit of work :) can’t wait to see the next tiny.
Beautiful work of art, Jim.
Amazing beauty.
Sanctus Bos lutum! That’s a lot of layers. Amazing you fit them into such a small space. Nice work!
A MUSE in YOUR POCKET! With each new diorama, I’m becoming more intrigued! How many dioramas will there be? Vos es ballista!
Oh My God!! It’s so cute! I love how its portable and small. It must have taken so long to make. Really creative… Great Job!!
All of the pictures look so wonderful! I love how it starts off with an Altoids box and than it opens up to another picture. This website is very interesting to look at and is very fun to look at the pictures. They are all so beautiful!
WOW! I can’t believe you got that many layers to fit in a mini altoids container. What is the smallest diorama you have ever done?
This is very interesting and quite clever! I’m really intrigued by this idea of doing a detailed drawing and layering it into a small space.
I love your latest tiny paper cut out diorama! I never knew that they could be so amazing to look at. Also, it is being Eco-friendly by reusing the Altoids tin. Who knew artwork inside such a small item, could be so cool to look at?. Jim, you are such an incredible artist, and I can’t wait until the next diorama. I have an idea for you, try using a Snapple bottle as your base instead of an Altoid container.
Best wishes,
Virginia L
Your cut outs are amazing! I wish I was as talented and passionate as you. I will certainly continue to follow your artwork!
Sincerely,
Kara F
@Diana: I have a few more thought out. I don’t know for sure how many there will be, but I decided a while ago that I wanted to work with paper cutouts/shadow box dioramas. So, hopefully there will me many more.
@Brooke: The watch was the smallest one so far…but I have a smaller one coming soon.
Thank you ALL for your comments, and for visiting!
I think its so neat how you use regular household items to make mini scenes! Its so Eco-Friendly. It looks great! I really like how detailed you drawings are! The cut outs are amazing! Who knew you could make such a cool work of art from trash?
@emily: Check out Robert Rauschenberg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Rauschenberg – he did amazing things with trash.
Wow! It is really amazing how you cut and fit all of those layers of paper into the small box. I love to see the steps that you do to make final piece. It is very detailed and great pictures. I will certainly continue to follow your artwork!

The layers add a great touch! It is amazing how you can add such great detail in a small tin. I am now inspired to make my own illustrations in a small dioroma!!
